Greece - Kos

Beaches that never end and turquoise waters; lush vegatation and abounding running streams; ancient and medieval monuments; grand edifices of Italian architecture all come to spell one word:  Kos.  It is the third largest island of the Dodecanese, a mere 4 miles away from the coast of Turkey. It owes its name possibly to the daughter of legendary King Merops who was also known as Koos. It is the birthplace of Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine” (460-377 BC).  It has been inhabited since neolithic times (5th-4th millenium BC).  In the 14th century, St. John’s Knights took over the island, strengthened the fortifications of older forts and built new ones.

During the Turkish Occupation, the island received the onslaught of many invaders such as the Knights who attempted to recapture the island, the Venetians, etc. A number of monumental public buildings were built during the Italian rule (1912-1945). It was officially unified with Greece in 1948. There are ferries to Kos from Piraeus, and flights from the “Eleftherios Venizelos” international airport in Athens. Surface area: 290 sq. km; coastline: 112 km; population: 31,000.
